What the cut-e / Aon assessment is

cut-e is a psychometric test publisher founded in Hamburg in 2002 and acquired by Aon in 2017. Its tests are now sold under the Aon brand, and you will see the assessment described either way — "the cut-e test", "the Aon assessment", or by the name of an individual test such as scales numerical or switchChallenge. They are the same family.

Aon now administers more than 30 million assessments a year, in over 40 languages across 90 countries. That scale matters for one practical reason: the tests you sit are the same tests used across hundreds of employers, so preparing for the format transfers directly from one application to the next.

Almost all cut-e testing happens online and unsupervised, early in the process — usually straight after the application form and before any human sees your CV. It is a screening stage, and for most large graduate schemes it is the stage where the majority of candidates are cut.

The classic scales ability tests are used far more widely still — across banking, insurance, retail, logistics, engineering and the public sector. If an employer's online assessment is branded Aon, or the test window is unusually short (six or twelve minutes rather than thirty), you are almost certainly sitting a cut-e test.

Format

How the assessment works

Three features define the cut-e experience and catch out candidates who have only practised conventional psychometrics:

Very short

Individual tests run 5–12 minutes. There is no settling-in period — you are being measured from the first item.

Adaptive

Difficulty adjusts to your answers, so no two candidates see the same test. Questions getting harder is a good sign.

Over-length

Several tests contain more items than anyone can finish. Not completing is expected and is built into the scoring.

The range splits into two families, and most employers pick a handful from across both: the gamified smartPredict challenges, and the classic timed scales ability tests.

Part one

The smartPredict challenges

smartPredict is Aon's mobile-optimised, game-like series. Each challenge lasts roughly five to nine minutes and measures a single cognitive ability through an interactive task rather than a question paper. They are the least familiar part of the assessment, and the part where practice pays back most, because you cannot afford to spend the first two minutes working out the rules.

switchChallenge

You are shown two rows of coloured symbols and a set of operators. Your job is to identify which operator transformed the first row into the second. Later levels introduce a third row, and the operators combine.

The trick: compare the rows position by position before you look at the operators. Most operators are swaps or shifts, so establish what moved rather than what changed.

A dot lights up on a grid and you must hold its position in mind. Before you can recall it, an unrelated puzzle interrupts — an equation to verify, a shape to rotate, a pattern to check for symmetry. Several dots and several interruptions later, you reproduce the sequence in order.

The trick: encode the dots as a shape or a path rather than as separate squares, and answer the interrupting puzzle quickly. The interruption exists to overwrite your memory — dwelling on it is what costs you the sequence.

motionChallenge

A token sits on a grid crowded with sliding blocks, and one exit. Move the blocks aside so the token can reach the exit — in as few moves as possible. Efficiency is scored, not just completion.

The trick: trace the route to the exit before touching anything, and identify which block is genuinely blocking you — it is often not the nearest one. If a grid resists for thirty seconds, move on; a solved grid elsewhere is worth more than a stubborn one here.

Rather than asking you to compute an answer, digitChallenge shows you the answer and removes digits from the calculation. You fill the gaps. The arithmetic is simple — addition, subtraction, multiplication — but inverted, which is what makes it hard at speed.

The trick: work backwards from the result, and use the units column to eliminate possibilities immediately. The last digit of the answer usually fixes one gap on its own.

Part two

The scales ability tests

The scales range is cut-e's classic timed ability testing. The items look conventional, but the timing does not: these are deliberately speeded tests where the constraint is how fast you can find and process information, not whether you understand it.

Numerical Reasoning

Roughly 37 items in twelve minutes. Data is deliberately scattered across several tabbed tables and charts, and the difficulty is locating the right figure rather than calculating with it. Almost nobody finishes, and that is by design.

The trick: read the question first, decide which tab holds the answer, then go straight there. Most lost time is spent hunting, not computing.

Verbal Reasoning

Statements judged against passages spread across tabs, marked true, false or cannot say. As with the numerical test, the passages are structured so that finding the relevant sentence is most of the work.

The trick: judge only against the text, never against what you know to be true. "Cannot say" is correct far more often than candidates expect.

Ten grids of letters and numbers; six have already been sorted into two groups. Work out the rule that separates them, then classify the rest. One of Aon's most used and least intuitive tests.

The trick: count digits versus letters first — it is the single most common rule. And a rule that fits five of six sorted grids is the wrong rule.

A row of related figures follows a rule, and one breaks it. Rules cover count, rotation, shading and position, and change from item to item so no single strategy carries over.

The trick: check properties in a fixed order — count, then shape, then rotation, then shading. Counting elements resolves more items than anything else.

A matrix with one cell missing. Rules run along both rows and columns, and the answer must satisfy every one of them at once.

The trick: solve the row rule and the column rule separately, then intersect. Most wrong options satisfy one axis and fail the other.

Written English in a professional context: grammar and agreement, correct spelling, and business vocabulary. Common where written communication with clients or colleagues matters.

The trick: subject–verb agreement across a long clause is the most frequent trap. Where two options both sound acceptable, one is usually too informal.

Simple, repetitive comparisons over a continuous run. Each judgement is easy; the test is whether your accuracy holds as the task becomes monotonous.

The trick: find a steady rhythm rather than sprinting. Accuracy decay in the final minute is what this test is really measuring.

Spatial Reasoning

A flat cube net is shown with a symbol on each face, and you work out which of the folded cubes it makes. Each symbol has to land on the correct face at the correct rotation, so the options cannot be separated by eye. Common in engineering, technical and apprenticeship assessments.

The trick: faces that sit opposite each other in the net can never both be visible on one view of the cube — that alone eliminates most wrong options. Then work from a corner where three faces meet, since that fixes the whole orientation.

Gears, levers, pulleys, pressure and circuits applied to practical situations. Used in engineering, manufacturing and technical apprenticeship assessments — not usually in commercial hiring.

The trick: meshed gears turn in opposite directions, belted wheels turn the same way, and a longer lever arm trades force for distance. Sketch the arrows rather than holding them in your head.

How you are scored

There is no fixed pass mark. Your raw performance is converted into a percentile against a norm group — a reference sample of comparable candidates — and the employer sets its own cut-off. That cut-off moves with the role and with how many people applied, which is why the same score can clear one scheme and not another.

Two things follow from this that change how you should sit the test:

  • Accuracy is weighted heavily. On tests designed to be unfinishable, answering fewer items correctly usually beats answering more items carelessly.
  • There is no negative marking on the standard scales tests, so never leave an item you have reached unanswered. Eliminate what you can and commit.

Because the tests are adaptive, questions getting harder is a signal you are performing well — not a reason to panic. Candidates who lose composure at that point tend to give back the advantage.

Strategy

How to prepare

The available gain from preparation is concentrated in one place: removing unfamiliarity. These are short tests with unusual formats, and a candidate who spends the first ninety seconds working out the interface has already lost a quarter of the test.

  1. Learn the formats first, not the content. Sit each test type once with no pressure, purely to understand the rules and the controls.
  2. Then practise under real timing. Six minutes feels very different from an untimed run. Build the pacing instinct before the day.
  3. Drill the mechanical skills. Times tables, percentages and fraction work underpin digitChallenge and scales numerical, and hesitation there is what costs items.
  4. Rehearse your scan pattern for the tabbed numerical and verbal tests — question first, locate the tab, then read. This is the single biggest time saving available.
  5. Sit the real thing properly. Desktop, wired connection, no phone, no interruptions. Most of these tests are unsupervised, so the conditions are yours to control.

Common mistakes

Practising generic aptitude tests instead

Standard 30-minute numerical papers train the wrong instincts. cut-e's timing and answer formats are distinctive, and generic practice does not transfer well.

Trying to finish

On the over-length tests, racing for completion is how careless errors creep in. Depth of accuracy scores better than breadth.

Working out the rules during the test

The single most expensive mistake on the smartPredict challenges. Two minutes of confusion in a six-minute test is a third of your score.

Sitting it on a phone

The gamified challenges are mobile-optimised, but the tabbed numerical and verbal tests punish a small screen badly. Use a desktop.

Ignoring the practice items

Aon provides example items before each test. They are untimed and cost nothing. Use every one.

There is no fixed pass mark. Your result is compared against a norm group — other candidates for similar roles — and expressed as a percentile. Employers then set their own cut-off, which varies by role and by how many applicants they have.

Is it possible to prepare for the smartPredict challenges?

Yes. They are unfamiliar game-like tasks, and almost all of the improvement available comes from removing that unfamiliarity — understanding the rules, the controls and the scoring before the clock starts, rather than working them out during a six-minute test.

Do you get a calculator for the numerical tests?

For scales numerical, employers usually permit a basic calculator, and the test is designed around locating the right data rather than heavy arithmetic. digitChallenge is a mental task and is not designed for a calculator.

What happens if I do not finish in time?

That is normal and expected. Several cut-e tests contain more items than anyone can complete — scales numerical is roughly 37 items in 12 minutes. Scoring accounts for this, so accuracy on what you do answer matters more than racing to the end.
